Annie McKenzie

Director
I’m inspired by writers and filmmakers like Mike Leigh, Andrea Arnold, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Shane Meadows and Michaela Coel.
In theatre, I like stripping things back. Listening. Getting out of the way. Cos at the end of the day, all we have is our body in time and space under gravity. The less we push, the more interesting things get.
In film, I like strong visual storytelling: beautiful images, awkward silences, and the magic of a good one-shot.
My work includes:
-
Sad-Vents, an Offie Award-winning solo show by Eleanor Hill, where I shaped a darkly comic, visually inventive piece exploring depression and digital culture.
-
Figs, a surreal comedy short about grief, death and acceptance, shot in one day with a micro crew, in a white box, with some very odd imagery.
-
A proof-of-concept adaptation of Richard II, reimagined through a contemporary lens to explore power, gender and intergenerational trauma.
-
Corners at The Pleasance, an R&D exploring homelessness through interviews and autobiographical material developed with people with lived experience.
-
Arachne at The Arcola, an R&D reimagining Ovid through a contemporary lens using physical theatre, puppetry and text inspired by Under Milk Wood.
